New Curriculum -- Com 315

One of the most exciting new features of the new curriculum is COM 315, a 1 credit workshop on software you need to know. Fall term we will offer COM 315 in video editing, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, InDesign, and Powerpoint.

The workshops run on Friday evening and Saturday. (Check Safari for which weekends for which section.) You should plan to sign up for the one that matches the course you're taking that term: for instance, if you're taking Publication Design or are a new Observer editor, you should plan to take InDesign this fall. If you're in Com 306 you should take Photoshop and/or Dreamweaver.

These workshops are taught by faculty who use the programs regularly. Instead of a textbook, we will be using lynda.com, one of the best sites for tutorials.

These credits can be used as elective credits in the new curriculum.

Welcome to my Blog as chair of the Communication Department. This is a place where I want to tell you about things happening in the department, hear your ideas and suggestions, and catch up with alumni! We're doing our program review -- a look at what we've been doing for the last five years, and what we want to do in the next five years. In doing the self-study, I was amazed at all the growth and the accomplishments we've done. And we've got some exciting ideas about the future as well.

So I've created a couple of questions for you to address (see below). And, please let us know what you're doing.

One of the reasons it's challenging to design curriculum in this department, is that the fields are changing so rapidly. So look into the future -- what do you see ahead in your field? How do we at Central help future students meet those challenges and opportunities?

The self-study is a big document, 30 pages or so, and I didn't bother to post the attachments, and appendix. Still, we want your feedback, about the self-study, the department, or your experiences here. And what do you think about the new curriculum?

We're looking for our alumni! Please tell us what you're doing, where you are, who you married, how many kids.... you know, all the good gossip..... And don't forget to tell us what your major was and when you were here.
